In a recent interview King said that he had matured as an author, and he didn't scare by tricks, but by making you fall in love with the characters. Hold on i know what you're thinking love can make you scared, but think about it, if you care deeply for a character then you will fear for them in dangerous situations. This pushes horror from just the grimy gritty scare to a fear roller coaster.
